Drivers Licence
What is the latest update on licence renewal in Edmonton?
To renew or get your Alberta driver’s licence, bring your current licence if you have one, a valid government-issued ID, and any supporting documents required for your situation.
Starting July 2, 2026, Albertans renewing a driver’s licence or ID card must also provide proof that they are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada.
Once your legal entitlement has been verified, you generally will not need to provide it again unless your status changes. If your licence has expired for a longer period, you may need additional documents, such as a passport or birth certificate. A medical form may also be required depending on your age, licence class, or personal circumstances.
What documents do I need before I renew my driver’s licence?
If you are visiting a registry office to renew your driver’s licence or ID card, it is helpful to prepare your documents before you arrive. Depending on your renewal, you may need:
- Your current Alberta driver’s licence or ID card
- Valid government-issued identification
- Proof that you are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada
- Any extra documents required for your specific situation
Having your documents ready can help make your visit faster and reduce the chance of needing to come back.
What other changes are being made to driver’s licences and ID cards?
In addition to the new legal entitlement verification requirement, Alberta is introducing optional updates for eligible Albertans.
You may choose to add a Canadian citizenship marker to your driver’s licence or ID card. You may also choose to add your Personal Health Number, also known as your PHN.
These updates are optional, but they may make identification more convenient by keeping key information on one card.

- Valid identification documents
- Proof of Alberta residency
- Proof that you are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada
- Parent or legal guardian consent if you are under 18
